Tips for Writing a Call to Action That Gets Results
The goal of any marketing campaign is to get your audience to take action. But you can’t just expect your audience to know what you want them to do. You have to tell them what you want them to do.
Whether you want people to shop your latest sale, follow you on LinkedIn, or read your latest blog post, you have to craft an effective CTA (call to action) in order to get conversions.
The simplest CTA is “Buy now!” And while that can work for people who are already motivated to make a purchase, in reality, the more information you can provide to potential customers with your CTA, the better!
So what makes a more effective CTA? We are giving you our best tips for writing a better call to action, giving you more conversions.
1 | Create a Sense of Urgency
A surefire way to get people to take action is to create urgency. You can do this with phrases such as:
- Limited time
- Today only
- Limited quantities
- Limited opportunity
- Special event
These time-sensitive phrases create a sense of FOMO, or “fear of missing out.” People hate to think they are missing out on a product or deal. Think just how effective Prime Day is, a two-day sale event put on by Amazon each year.
2 | Take Command with Your Words
Another way to create a sense of urgency through action is using a strong command verb. These not only tell people in a concise and direct way what you want them to do, but it also lets them know they are getting something of value. You can use words such as:
- Buy
- Shop
- Order
- Download
- Subscribe
- Fill out this form
- Find out how
- Find out more
3 | Give the Why
Your audience generally knows what’s in it for you. But you need to know what’s in it for them. How will what you are offering better the lives, jobs, or work of your audience? This should tie in heavily with your value proposition, or unique selling point, which is arguably the most important marketing tool for acquiring new leads and increasing clicks.
An example of giving the why someone should take action would be, “Call today to schedule your free consultation and quote!” With this sentence, you’ve not only commanded a person to take action (call today), but you have provided them with the why and what’s in it for them (a free consultation and quote).
4 | Provoke Emotion
Studies show that most purchasing decisions are not logical ones, they are actually based on emotion. This is something that holiday marketing is well known for. It’s those touching commercials that make you remember family traditions or tear up at the thought of good will. But this type of marketing can be used at any time of year. It’s all about using words that provoke a certain emotion or sentiment. Perhaps it’s joy or even achieving your dreams. A great example would be a travel agency using the CTA of, “Plan your dream vacation today!” This not only gets someone excited, but it also makes them feel like they could achieve a dream of theirs, like finally visiting Rome.
5 | Personalize It
Finally, it’s important to remember that you may have several distinct audience groups that come to your brand for different reasons, or are at different points in your sales funnel. When this is the case, it’s key to build different campaigns with separate CTAs. The CTA you use for brand awareness will be much different than the one you use for making a purchase. Brand awareness is often about pushing people to your blog or site to find out more information, while those who want to make a purchase would respond better to a CTA that uses words like buy or shop. By personalizing the consumer journey, not only will users be more likely to take the action you want them to take, but you will also build better brand trust, which is key to cultivating loyal customers!
