As the world of social media becomes inundated by marketers, the real people who flocked to social media for real relationships are wanting REAL stuff from businesses. However, too often, businesses post fluffy articles and trite statements that say nothing about who they really are. Let me let you in on a little secret…the world can tell when you’re being authentic and when you’re just saying what the industry says you should say. Here are some thoughts that guide me and my core philosophy behind the social media management I do for clients:
- Let Your Hair Down: Social media is a great platform for businesses to relax a little. You can have fun with your business and still come across as a professional. Let’s face it: social media was created originally as a fun outlet, so you should be able to have a little fun as well.
- Go Behind The Scenes: Anyone can go search for your website online. However, if someone is going to take the time to follow your business on social media, they are hoping to get insider info on who you are, what you do, and why you do it. Give the world this unique, behind the scenes look into your business.
- Amateur Is Sometimes Best: Professional videos and photos are great, and there is a time and place for them. However, social media allows you to post real-time videos and pictures of your business. Often, the amateur videos and pictures are better because they are proof to the world that they are authentic, rather than a well-rehearsed, stock photo representation.
- Share Your Opinion: While I’m a big believer in being careful what you say (think politics, religion, etc.), if you never have a concrete opinion on anything, then your company has no personality. Sometimes shaking things up a little with an opinion you represent may strike a chord in someone or attract others to your message. I’m a firm believer that you will attract the right kinds of people to fit your company’s personality if you stay true to who you are.
- Use your own language: Sometimes it’s okay to throw the grammar rules out the window! Colloquial phrases show people how you really speak and can help picture you saying the words right then and there. Plus, edgy and informal verbiage grabs people’s attention a little more than a stiff, polished sentences.
Online relationships matter – even the ones folks have with businesses on social media. Make the most of the great tools out there to share your business and its values with your clients, prospects, and the world!
